The Ice Age Trail – A Spectacular Fell Loop with 360-Degree Views Right in Levi

When vacationing in Levi, you don't always need to drive far to experience authentic fell atmosphere and the magic of wide horizons. Circling the summit of Levi Fell, the Ice Age Trail (Jääkausipolku) offers the perfect way to explore alpine nature and its fascinating history, right from the heart of the resort.

Our day's adventure began as we headed up from our cabin, Chalet Nulkka in Levi, towards Peak Lapland Restaurant Tuikku. While not the official starting point, it is incredibly easy to join the loop from there, making it the perfect starting point for our hike. Stepping directly onto the trail from Tuikku's parking lot is incredibly convenient. As a handy tip, you can easily access the path directly from Chalet Nulkka Levi or Hiihtogreeni cabin if you don't mind a brief uphill climb up the ski slopes or side trails.

Fell Wilderness and Preserved Snow for the Coming Winter

The Ice Age Trail is an exceptionally enjoyable route because it circles high up near the summit of Levi Fell. This elevated path treats hikers to spectacular 360-degree panoramic views. Looking in one direction, you are met with endless, untouched Lapland wilderness stretching to distant horizons; looking in another, you can admire the lively resort center of Levi from a bird's-eye perspective.

There are several rest spots along the route where you can sit down and enjoy the peaceful silence of the fell wilderness.

The route covers a diverse mix of terrain, which keeps the walk engaging. We navigated traditional rocky fell paths, crossed the open expanses of ski slopes, and dipped occasionally into sheltered, sub-alpine woodlands.

Alpine nature and rocky terrain along the Ice Age Trail

A ruggedly beautiful boulder field (rakka) dominates the landscape surrounding the summit of Levi Fell.

One of the most unique sights during a summer hike here is the massive mounds resting on the slopes, insulated under giant white covers. This is preserved snow stored over the summer. Thanks to these snowpiles, Levi's popular early-season ski tracks and first ski slopes can open as early as the beginning of October. It's a fascinating feeling to walk under the summer sun on a slope where winter's snow is already waiting for the upcoming season.

Clear Signposts and Whispers of History

There is virtually no risk of getting lost, as the Ice Age Trail is very clearly marked with blue signs and arrows painted on rocks and trees along the way. While the trail is classified as relatively easy and is suitable for most hikers, it's not entirely flat. To balance out the steady walking, the route features a couple of brief but brisk climbs that will get your heart rate up and give your legs a good workout.

As the name suggests, the trail is also an educational journey into the past. Along the path, you'll find several interesting information boards detailing the area's geology and explaining how the last Ice Age shaped Levi Fell and the surrounding landscape thousands of years ago. The signs do a wonderful job of explaining how the massive continental ice sheet smoothed the peaks of the fells and how the vast boulder fields (rakka) were formed.

Downhill Thrills and a Relaxing Finish on the Terrace

Alongside the history and scenery, the fell was full of activity. Along our walk, we spotted paragliders soaring gracefully through the sky and mountain bikers speeding down the steep tracks. Levi boasts exceptional downhill mountain biking trails (Levi Bike Park), and we noticed that new routes are constantly being developed and built around the fell.

The loop finishes perfectly back at the starting point outside Tuikku. There is hardly a better way to reward yourself after the hike than with a refreshing drink on the restaurant's stunning outdoor terrace. The sun-drenched views from the terrace crowned a successful day on the fell before we headed back to the peace of our cabin.
